Circulating AiR is a three-year pilot project consisting of an international artist-in-residence program that traverses the county of Hordaland on the west coast of Norway. Earlier, 3,14 arranged art shows that toured around the region, and as this practice faded out, the institution focused on rethinking new strategies in order to revitalize its engagement with the county. Each residency program lasts for a period of six to eight weeks, every single round being arranged in a new municipality.

By direct invitation, 3,14 curates profiled international artists inclined to work site-specifically. The program covers all expenses and provides a working fee as well as a production budget. The artists commit to developing site-related works during their stay, establishing a dialogue with the hosting community in various ways, i.e. by taking into account historical, geographical, contextual, contemporary and traditional aspects that have formed it. All projects are publically shown in their respective hosting communities and the artists also provide a lecture in a local school.

The program is funded by Hordaland Cultural Development Program (KUP), Hordaland county.

FROM SAO PAULO TO FITJAR

Thiago Rocha Pitta

Thiago Rocha Pitta
is a Brazilian artist based in São Paulo, with a broad and active career. Pitta works with different media but a red thread in his practice is established in an intrinsic relationship with nature. Regardless of the specificity and diversity of each individual project, one can often witness a dialogue with nature, with the surroundings. This dialogue is established through different means, it can be conceptual, or related to material choice, or referent to the surroundings the work is conducted, to its site-specificity.
Some of the places he has exhibited in are PS1-MOMA (NY), Fondation Cartier pour L’art Contemporain (Paris), as well as 30th São Paulo Biennial, ARCO 2011 (Madrid), Mercosur Biennial 2005 and 2013. Pitta has also held numerous solo shows at different institutions, such as Meyer Riegger (Germany), Arts Initiative Tokyo, Museu de Arte da Pampulha (Brasil).

Pitta will be staying in Hordaland from May 17th until the end of June 2014. During his stay, he will hold a presentation at 3,14 and an art event at Fitjar.

The group has been very influential on defining new conceptual frameworks, artistic strategies and the general art discourse in the post soviet scene. In her solo practice, Kadyrova has been specially recognized for her sculptural work, which regardless of the usage of a wide span of materials, one can still notice the recurrence of some elements, such as asphalt, concrete and colourful ceramic tiles. The latter is considered one of the trademarks of her visual language.

Artist Statement
- Since I was born in USSR in 1987, I have moved countries every five years of my life, carrying fragments of my cultural and historical heritage and reintroducing them into new places until they stopped being recognizable. The work I have been producing to date was recreating a post-industrial, post-globalization environment abandoned by humans and reclaimed by nature. It has shaped into a series of works based on unweaving the architecture of the living space and depicting it in a state of arrested physical change, susceptible to the forces of gravity, entropy and decay, featuring the fall, the architectural suicide of recognizable structures.

Situated on the threshold between the architecture of memory and the architecture of ruination, the works introduce fragility as a quality of resistance to destruction, attempting to sketch the figure of the ruin coming up over the designs and architectures of our time. Globalization has made the world more distributed, dissipated, fluid and complex. In the context of these ever shifting grounds one either follows the instinct to preserve and return to what is known or to evolve into a new unanchored condition. It is an on-going conflict of opposing principles attempting to coexist. Following a similar assumption, the work is either pointing to an imagined hypothetical future or attempting to return to some distant primordial origins and reverse the history of evolution. Either way, it is never fully addressing the present, it exists somewhere in the suburbs of this present moment.

FROM INDIA TO UTNE

Gigi Scaria

Gigi Scaria will be staying in Utne August-October 2016.

GIGI SCARIA
Look up - Look down

Fredag 21. oct. 2016. kl. 19:00
HardingarT Bankbygget i Utne, Ullensvang.

”The act of balancing each other’s position is completely dependent upon the pressure one puts to one’s own side. If the pressure is maintained by keeping the strength of the other side in mind, the play will continue. The lack of understanding of the other side will make one stick in a disproportionate position forever. When the movement stops in a disproportionate position, balance becomes an unaffected truth. Where there is no equation, the vision blurs. There ‘see’ and ‘saw’ lose perspective”.

SPECIAL SCREENINGS
SARA RAJAEI / TATIANA BLASS

28.10. - 06.11.2016

At 3,14 we will now be proudly screening two separate projects developed under the program.

> SARA RAJAEI
In the gaze of Panoptes (2016) Single channel video installation, color, sound, 20 min.

Over a period of five years, 3,14 has been following the artistic ouvre of the Iranian born and Rotterdam based artist Sara Rajaei. The institution, fellow curators and audiences have had a unique opportunity to chart her development as well as her relationship to Bergen. The first exhibition at 3,14 provided an introduction to Rajaei’s practice featuring, at that time, both early and recent works. For the second viewing, Rajaei presented exclusively new pieces. As the latest round, BEK and 3,14 are delighted to present the video In the gaze of Panoptes, developed and produced in Bergen under 3,14´s artist in residency program, Circulating Air, in collaboration with BEK. Rajaei’s work is often grounded on the concept of time, memory and story telling.Rajaei studied at The Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and attended the two year residency program at Rijkakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam.

In Torborg Nedreaas’ Nothing grows by moonlight, the passing of time and the quality of light play important roles in the development of two parallel stories; meanwhile as the protagonist tells a life story within the safety of the walls of a stranger’s house, the narrator presents the reader a detailed description of the quality of light outside of that haven; evening light, the dark of the night and early morning… recreating the circumstances and the sounds which occur by the passage of time… As the morning light appears, the protagonist finishes the story and leaves...

In the gaze of Panoptes
is a short film inspired by the book Nothing grows by moonlight both by its approach to storytelling but also by its light influence... In May 2016, fifteen Bergen based individuals from different parts of the world, were invited to take part in the project and to share their life journeys in exchange of a chapter of the book being read to them. The plot of In the gaze of Panoptes is a blend of all those destinies which cross but meet one another in certain moments...

Like the character in Nothing grows by moonlight, the protagonist of the film also deals with issues such as departure, arrival, home, identity and solitude… following a 7-year-old lucid dream… transforming from the cityman to the caveman, taking refuge in the nature… becoming the perfect observer of the light… the watchman… the giant with hundred eyes…

> TATIANA BLASS
Encrenca_Trøbbel (2014) Video, 7 min. (in the gallerys´ vault)

We are glad to finally present for the Bergen public the video work Encrenca_Trøbbel of our earlier residency artist, Tatiana Blass (1979), a profiled Brazilian artist based in São Paulo. Blass works with different techniques, such as painting, sculpture, video and installation. Recurrent characteristics present in her work are the depiction or staging of the absurd, the insistence in transforming functional objects into dysfunctional ones and the distortion of language in something ineffective, into its breakdown.

Shot in Ålvik, during Blass’ residency stay in Kvam Herad, the performance-video depicts the Brazilian actress Ilana Gorban, who has no knowledge of the Norwegian language, interacting with the Norwegian actor, Sveinung Augestad, who does not speak Portuguese. Wearing particular costumes, the duo engages in an absurd and playful game, in which they alternately try to repeat each other’s lines, in each other’s mother tongues. Connected to one another through countless ribbons, reminding us of marionettes, the game evolves as the characters swap roles as the commander and the one being commanded. The work was first presented locally in Kunstnerhuset Kabuso (Øystese, Kvam) and later in Mexico, Brazil and in the US.

Tatiana Blass has held solo shows at several institutions, among them the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, Johannes Vogt Gallery (NY), CCBB (Rio de Janeiro), among others. Her work has also been shown in several group shows such as the 29th São Paulo International Biennial, at Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (Miami, USA), Wallraf-Richartz Museum (Cologne). She has also received several grants and prizes, including both the Jury Award and the Popular Vote Award of the PIPA Prize 2011 and was shortlisted at the Nam June Paik Award, in Germany.
